About

This master was created as a synergy between the Barcelona School of Informatics of the UPC, the School of Engineering of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Barcelona (UB) as an interuniversity master. Artificial Intelligence research is interdisciplinary by nature and draws on computer science, mathematics, statistics, biology, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics, ethics, psychology and law. The master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence offers you an integrative and cutting-edge approach to the field and its application to real scenarios. Research in AI at the consortium of Catalan universities supporting this program spans knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, natural language processing, autonomous agents, computer vision robotics, and visualization. The emphasis is on practical techniques—and a solid theoretical background—for designing and constructing intelligent systems, enabling graduates from this course to apply their skills in a variety of settings. These skills are in high demand in the market. As a graduate of this program you will have the skills to carry out AI research in academic and R&D environments and to identify how AI techniques can provide intelligent solutions to IT problems in companies and organizations.
The lectures of this master take place in the three participating universities: UB and UPC, which sit in Barcelona, while URV sits in Tarragona and requires mobility by the students.

Target

This program is addressed to national and international students who wish to acquire advanced knowledge in AI in order to occupy positions of responsibility in industry, the public sector and academia in Catalonia, Spain or abroad. The program covers many research areas related to the design, analysis and application of AI.

Students who undertake this master’s degree will be equipped to:

  • Deal with technically complex problems that require a degree of innovation and/or research.
  • Make strategically important decisions within their professional domain
  • Pursue doctoral studies within the domain of information and communication technologies at the UPC, the URV, the UB or abroad.

Why this master's degree?

The emphasis is on practical techniques—and a solid theoretical background—for designing and constructing intelligent systems, enabling graduates from this course to apply their skills in a variety of settings. As a graduate of this program you will have a good overview of the main AI techniques and an in-depth understanding of how to apply these techniques in at least one area within multi-agent systems, reasoning, data analytics and natural language processing. These skills are in high demand in the market. You will also have the skills to carry out AI research in academic and R&D environments and to identify how AI techniques can provide intelligent solutions to IT problems in companies and organizations.

Artificial Intelligence exists in many forms, including video games, robotics, search engines, face and/or voice recognition software, medical and banking applications, etc.

With so many career options available in the field, there is a job waiting for anyone willing to work for it.

The career options available to the well-educated student are many and varied and our program offers this high-level education to motivated graduate students. Clearly, Artificial Intelligence plays an increasingly important role in running the world around us and the possibilities for its use continue to grow.

Any student willing to put in the effort to gain a high level of education will be quickly accepted into this growing industry, in which salaries are high.

Admission

Calendar

The admission period to start the Master programme in September 2024, is open from 26 February to 26 May 2024.

The admission period is divided into two periods:

  • 1st period. From 26 February to 18 April. The decision on applications will be announced no later than 2 May.
  • 2nd period. From 22 April to 26 May. The decision on applications will be announced no later than 9 June 14 June.

The decision may be that the candidate has been admitted, or that the candidate has been rejected or, in the case of the 1st period, that the decision has been postponed until the following period.


The notification from 9 June will include a waiting list with all the candidates whose position in the candidates list is higher than the number of places offered in the Master. The list will be ordered by candidates access mark. The candidates in that list can become admitted if some of the candidates firstly admitted decide to give up their seat.

Admitted candidates must accept their admission and confirm it with the payment of the allocation fee should be done before the date indicated in the admission message. After that day, we will understand that they give up their seat, so their admission will be revoked and the place assigned to the following candidate on the waiting list.

The official list of accepted candidates will be published on July 2024, on the FIB website, in the "Enrolment" section of each Master programme.

Language

Candidates must provide proof of their English proficiency, with at least a B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (or equivalent).

Required Documents

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. DNI, NIE or passport
  3. Academic Personal Certificate. The certificate must detail the number of hours and credits studied and must include the grade awarded for each subject. This certificate also must contain information on the mark scheme and how grades are awarded.
  4. Diploma (or similar document). This document must confirm that the duration of the degree was at least three years and that is it a valid precursor to studies at postgraduate level (master’s degree) in that country. If that is not possible, it must indicate the level of higher education that the degree gives access to in the country where it was awarded.
  5. English knowledge certificate (minimum B2 of Common European Framework of Reference). The certificate must be included in the table (in Catalan language) published with the decree REU/2197/2024 issued by the Ministry of Research and Universities of the Catalan Government.
  6. If the applicant holds other qualifications related to the subject area of the Master’s Degree course applied for and that are different from those given to meet entrance requirements, it is necessary to include the original certificates and copy (or official copy) with the application.
  7. If the degree that gives access to the master was obtained in a foreign country, official statement of equivalence of the average grade obtained.
  8. Motivation letter of at most two pages containing a brief description of your trajectory, academic interests and reasons for applying to this specific Master. Please detail also your career objectives.
IMPORTANT:

All the academic documents issued by Pakistani institutions must be attached together with the electronic validation of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC)
All the academic documents issued by Chinese institutions must be attached together with the China Credentials Verification of the Center for Student Services and Development (CSSD)
All documents issued outside Spain or in non-Spanish-speaking countries must be translated into Spanish or Catalan.All documents issued in non-EU countries must be legalised and bear the corresponding apostille.
 

Selection Criteria

The Academic Committee is in charge of the admission decisions of the candidates. The criteria are: Academic Information (50%), Background and professional experience (40%) and Motivation (10%).

The criteria details follow:

Academic Information: 
  • Final average grade for the undergraduate degree that provides access to the master's degree
  • Ranking of the university issuing the previous degree, using the most common rankings (e.g. ARWU, QS World University, etc.)
  • Academic performance on the previous degree
Background and professional experience:
  • Suitability of the candidate's previous degree. Holders of bachelor's degrees in disciplines in the field of Computer Science and Mathematics will be given preference, but candidates from other disciplines are welcome
  • Experience in innovation and research projects 
  • Additional university degrees
Motivation:
  • Candidate's resume and motivation letter
