About

The goal of the master’s degree is to expose students to in-depth, state-of-the-art computer graphics with a focus on knowledge of technology, the design of efficient algorithms and the solution of real-life problems. Specifically, the master’s degree addresses new challenges that arise in building digital models and interactive renderings using commodity hardware and mobile devices, with applications in fields such as industrial design, cultural heritage, medicine, urban design and animation. Students will also master the fundamentals for starting a research or professional career in a range of Computer Graphics domains.

Target

Students are expected to have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related fields. Candidates with weak computer programming skills will also be considered but they may be required to take complementary courses.

Employment opportunities

Students of the master’s degree will develop expertise in modeling and treating geometric and volumetric data, as well as knowledge of the management, manipulation, interaction and rendering of highly complex geometric systems with application in fields such as industrial design, computer games, urban design, medical imaging, cultural heritage.

The master’s degree incorporates the latest advances in 3D computer graphics modeling, crowd simulation, real‐time rendering and animation, lighting effects, scientific visualization, interaction, mobile technology and augmented and virtual reality.

Upon completion of the degree, our graduates will possess the necessary skills to join a leading international corporation, create a start-up, or enroll in a doctoral program in any computer graphics field.

In the past, graduates have been hired by companies and universities such as Sener, ALMA IT Systems, Mediapro, Nvidia, HP, UB, Trinity College Dublin, the Universitat de Barcelona, and Linköping University. The faculty maintains continuous collaborations with these and other centers, including CNR-Pisa, Georgia Tech-Atlanta, CRS4-Sardenya, UPenn-Pennsylvania, Vall-Hebron Hospital, and INDO.

Admission

Calendar

The admission period to start the Master programme in February 2025, is open from 28 October to 11 December 2024.

The decision may be that the candidate has been admitted, or that the candidate has been rejected.

On 20 December the notification will include a waiting list with all the candidates whose position in the candidates list, ordered by their access mark, is higher than the number of places offered in the Master. The candidates in that list can become admitted if some of the candidates firstly admitted decide to give up their seats.

Admitted candidates must accept their admission and confirm it with the payment of the allocation fee before 9 January 2025. After that day, we will understand that they give up their seat, so their admission will be revoked and the place assigned to the following candidate in the waiting list.

The official list of accepted candidates will be published on 17 January 2025, on the FIB website, in the "Enrolment > New Students" section of each Master program (MIRI | MEI).

Places available for this intake

  • Master in Informatics Engineering (MEI): 5
  • Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI): 10
There are no places available for High Performance Computing (MIRI-HPC).

Student Testimonials

My personal experience in the master in Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality is that you get to work the fundamentals in depth while they give you a broad view on which are the hot research topics nowadays. Also, thanks to the close relationship with the teaching staff we were able to ask our own interests to be included in the contents of some subjects. I feel that my specialty is the right choice for anyone that wants to work in research around videogames, animation movies, cultural heritage,...
Moreover, the Virvig group, which is charge of it, holds a weekly seminar with free coffee and pastries!

Marc Comino - Bachelor Degree in Informatics Engineering at FIB

Since I was already working as a research scholar at the moment I finished the bachelor degree, I was pretty sure that the Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics would be my best choice. Through the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality speciality, I deepened my knowledge about my field of interest, strengthening some other transversal topics at the same time. The small size of the classes allowed  the personal treatment of the students and helped to create a friendly atmosphere. I keep a great memory of these two years, in which I met people from all over the world while I opened the way for my professional career.
