About

The master’s degree gives the best foundations in the fields of computer architecture and/or supercomputing. Graduates will have in-depth knowledge of digital systems and microprocessor design, supercomputer systems and parallel programming.

Target

The master’s degree is aimed at students who have a bachelor’s degree in the fields of Engineering (e.g., Computer Science, Electrical EngineeringTelecommunications Engineering) or Applied Sciences (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Biology) and are pursuing a better understanding of High-Performance Computing fields and, more specifically, Supercomputing, Computer Architecture and Technology.

Language

English

Duration

Four semesters. (120 ECTS)

Face-to-face

Workload

Full-time: 20h lectures, 20h personal work per week
Part-time: half of full-time
Lectures are in the morning (8h-14h)

Why this master's degree?

High Performance Computing (HPC) allows scientists and engineers to solve complex science, engineering, and business problems using applications that require high bandwidth, enhanced networking, and very high computing capabilities. Professionals who have taken this specialization possess all of the knowledge and skills required by companies and institutions with R&D centres that want to incorporate emerging technologies. This specialization fulfils the requirements for admission to the doctoral degree in Computer Architecture.

The master’s degree is taught by highly qualified professors, including leading researchers from the BSC (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), and professors with past research experience at companies like Intel, IBM, HP, Compaq, and Sun Microsystems.

Employment opportunities

Employment opportunities related to High-Performance Computing (HPC) cover computer science and engineering fields such as the following:

Computer architecture

Graduates can advance the hardware and software technologies available to build and efficiently use supercomputing infrastructure, thus bridging the gap between computer architecture and application requirements. They may propose novel architectures for processors, memory hierarchy and their interconnection, and programming models and their efficient implementation.

Computer applications

Develop new computational strategies to simulate complex problems capable of running efficiently on modern supercomputers.
Graduates can develop new computational strategies for simulating complex problems that are capable of running efficiently on modern supercomputers.
Uses are diverse and examples include animated graphics, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research, petroleum exploration, car crash simulations, airflow over aircraft wings, data mining and storage, visualization, atmospheric modeling, bioinformatics, genomics, etc.

Admission

Calendar

The admission period to start the Master programme in February 2025, is open from 28 October to 11 December 2024.

The decision may be that the candidate has been admitted, or that the candidate has been rejected.

On 20 December the notification will include a waiting list with all the candidates whose position in the candidates list, ordered by their access mark, is higher than the number of places offered in the Master. The candidates in that list can become admitted if some of the candidates firstly admitted decide to give up their seats.

Admitted candidates must accept their admission and confirm it with the payment of the allocation fee before 9 January 2025. After that day, we will understand that they give up their seat, so their admission will be revoked and the place assigned to the following candidate in the waiting list.

The official list of accepted candidates will be published on 17 January 2025, on the FIB website, in the "Enrolment > New Students" section of each Master program (MIRI | MEI).

Places available for this intake

  • Master in Informatics Engineering (MEI): 5
  • Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI): 10
There are no places available for High Performance Computing (MIRI-HPC).

Requirements

UPC

The admission requirements for the UPC's official masters can be found at What are the requirements to enroll in a master's degree?

Language

Candidates must provide proof of their English proficiency, with at least a B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (or equivalent).

Required Documents

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. DNI, NIE or passport
  3. Academic Personal Certificate. The certificate must detail the number of hours and credits studied and must include the grade awarded for each subject. This certificate also must contain information on the mark scheme and how grades are awarded.
  4. Diploma (or similar document). This document must confirm that the duration of the degree was at least three years and that is it a valid precursor to studies at postgraduate level (master’s degree) in that country. If that is not possible, it must indicate the level of higher education that the degree gives access to in the country where it was awarded.
  5. English knowledge certificate (minimum B2 of Common European Framework of Reference). The certificate must be included in the table (in Catalan language) published with the decree REU/2197/2024 issued by the Ministry of Research and Universities of the Catalan Government.
