About

First of all, this master enables you for the exercise of profession of Computer Engineer. The master’s degree equips graduates with the knowledge and hands-on experience across a wide spectrum of information technology domains: from cloud computing to security and from computer graphics to information systems, with a focus on IT management and leadership. Graduates become the “Swiss Army knife” of IT in their organizations. Master students can easily combine studies with external curricular practices or a contract at companies; doing networking and building their future from the beginning.

Target

This master’s degree is the right degree not just for holders of a bachelor's degree in Informatics Engineering but also in closely related fields in either Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Industrial and Telecommunications Engineering, ...) or Science (e.g., Mathematics and Physics, ...) who pursue a deeper knowledge of information technology and its applications. In particular, this modality is addressed to professionals and future professionals in Computer Engineering that want to update or increase their long-term knowledge meanwhile they enjoy of real practices (external curricular practices) or a job in a company.

Why this master's degree?

First of all, because this master enables you for the exercise of profession of Computer Engineer. Moreover, today, information technology (IT) is the cornerstone of any business in any market. This master’s degree empowers graduates to deal with a wide range of IT disciplines and equips them with the management skills that they need to become IT managers and IT experts in their future jobs. The wide range of technologies presented on the master’s degree and the analysis and development of real cases provide a realistic scenario in which students are guided through their initial contact with real-world cases. These professionals are highly in demand, as all kind of industries need IT experts and managers in their organizations. The versatility and expertise in a range of technologies of graduates of this master’s degree will ensure their prevalence in the IT job market.

Curriculum

Students of this modality will achieve their studies in 2 years with the following dedication:
  • a maximum of 4-5 hours/day dedicated to their studies at FIB,
  • around 5 hours/day dedicated to their formation and work at the company.

Elective External Formation or Experience

This block of credits (up to 12 ECTS) can be obtained based on curricular external practices, seminars (conferences, summer schools, hackathon, etc.), and recognition of industrial experience. In the case of curricular external practices (FIB specific academic regulations) or seminars: 1 ECTS is equivalent to around 25 hours of student’s work. In the case of recognition of industrial experiences, it is required a minimum of 1600 hours for 6 ECTS (UPC academic regulations, section 4.1.4), and then proportional. However, this block can also be fully or partially achieved by enrolling master MEI elective subjects or other UPC master subjects.

Senior management

Information systems managers

They are involved in the strategic decisions that affect information systems, ensure that communication flows between technological and business departments, take responsibility for projects to implement applications, set up technological infrastructure, draw up budgets and manage human resources in their departments.

Development managers

They are responsible for the development of applications, supervise one or more project managers, speak to users through their project managers, and devise technical and quality policies.

Production and operations managers

They are responsible for technology infrastructure and platforms, manage budgets, guarantee the availability of information systems, work in close collaboration with the development department to accurately forecast the IT infrastructure that may be required, and ensure that new applications are properly implemented in systems.

Heads of IT

They carry out most of the tasks described above in small- and medium-sized businesses. They draw up a business’s systems plan, organize the IT department (equipment, programs and human resources) and work in coordination with the rest of the departments in the company.

Technical management

Project managers

They are responsible for the overall management of projects in terms of technical specifications, financing and deadlines, interact with users, take part in user training programs and oversee the implementation of applications. 

Functional analysts

They take part in the functional analysis of users’ needs, draw up technical specifications and take responsibility for the development of applications. 

Heads of department

They ensure the coherence and progress of all IT projects, manage the deployment of new applications and their maintenance, and supervise teams of project managers, functional analysts, etc. 

Consultants

They work for consultancies and/or business advisory services that assess the functional and/or technical needs of their clients, and they set up customized programs and training sessions for users.

Database architects

They devise, develop and integrate a company’s database.

Heads of quality, methods and procedures

They define and implement development standards, coordinate development teams, define quality indicators and their implementation, and put testing and quality control procedures in place. 

Systems architects

They devise the technical and functional architecture of information systems.

Admission

Language

Students whose mother tongue is not Spanish or Catalan must accredit their knowledge of at least one of these languages at B2 level in the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR).

It is also possible to demonstrate attainment of the B2 level with an equivalent certificate obtained at the University.

Required Documents

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. DNI, NIE or passport
  3. Academic Personal Certificate. The certificate must detail the number of hours and credits studied and must include the grade awarded for each subject. This certificate also must contain information on the mark scheme and how grades are awarded.
  4. Diploma (or similar document). This document must confirm that the duration of the degree was at least three years and that is it a valid precursor to studies at postgraduate level (master’s degree) in that country. If that is not possible, it must indicate the level of higher education that the degree gives access to in the country where it was awarded.
  5. If the applicant holds other qualifications related to the subject area of the Master’s Degree course applied for and that are different from those given to meet entrance requirements, it is necessary to include the original certificates and copy (or official copy) with the application.
  6. If the degree that gives access to the master was obtained in a foreign country, official statement of equivalence of the average grade obtained.

IMPORTANT:

All the academic documents issued by Pakistani institutions must be attached together with the electronic validation of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC)
All the academic documents issued by Chinese institutions must be attached together with the China Credentials Verification of the Center for Student Services and Development (CSSD)
All documents issued outside Spain or in non-Spanish-speaking countries must be translated into Spanish or Catalan.All documents issued in non-EU countries must be legalised and bear the corresponding apostille.
   

Selection Criteria

The Academic Committee is in charge of the admission decisions of the candidates. The criteria are: Academic Information (50%), Background and professional experience (40%) and Motivation (10%).

The criteria details follow:

Academic Information: 
  • Final average grade for the undergraduate degree that provides access to the master's degree
  • Ranking of the university issuing the previous degree, using the most common rankings (e.g. ARWU, QS World University, etc.)
  • Academic performance on the previous degree
Background and professional experience:
  • Suitability of the candidate's previous degree. Holders of bachelor's degrees in disciplines in the field of Computer Science will be given preference 
  • Experience in innovation and research projects 
  • Additional university degrees
Motivation:
  • Candidate's resume and motivation letter
